Outdoor Scouting

1) Map & Compass

a. Know at least eight map symbols and be able to find them on an Ordnance Survey or Topographical map

2) Hiking

a. Make a list or infographic of how to dress appropriately for a hike and make a list of what to bring along.

3. Loose pants or convertible pants that can switch to short length when it gets hot or

shorts

4. Sports shoes with breathable socks

ii. What to bring:

1. Raincoat in case it rains

2. Water bottle

3. Food such as granola bars, nuts or biscuits

4. Map and compass (if need)

5. Sunblock

6. Torchlight

Sports & Hobbies

a. Show good sportsmanship in all Pack games and activities and write why this is important.

Good sportsmanship teaches teamwork, emphasizes playing fair, etiquette, respect, character, kindness, perseverance, etc. These lessons will determine how a person will become in the future.

Helping Others

1) Home Safety

a. Make a list or infographic describing the common causes of accidents at home and how to prevent them

– Slips, trips and falls: Remove any hazards on the floor (e.g. wire), clear any clutters and keep the floor dry

– Burns from hot objects such as iron or pots: Keep these hot objects out of reach

– Cuts from sharp objects such as knife: Keep sharp and dangerous objects out of reach or covered

– Choking from large objects in mouth: Keep small objects that are not meant to be eaten away from small children

– Hit by falling object: Keep objects in tall shelves properly and do not overload it.

– Electrical shocks: Cover all unused sockets and do not use faulty appliances

b. Teach others about home safety by making a poster, writing and acting a skit or making up a game

Science & Nature

1) Stars & Planets

a. Find out about the stars, constellations, the planets and/or the Solar System

A constellation is a group of stars that appears to form a pattern or picture. They are easily recognisable patterns that help people to orient themselves using the night sky. There are 88 official constellations.

The Solar System is the system of the Sun and the objects that orbit around it. It comprised 8 planets and countless asteroids, meteorites and comets. The 4 inner planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, all of which consist mainly of rock. The 4 outer planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus, which consists mainly of gases or ice. Pluto was initially considered the 9th planet until 2006 when International Astronomical Union voted to classify Pluto as a dwarf planet instead.

b. Draw a telescope and label the parts, stating their functions.

i. Lenses: The bigger the lens, the more light a telescope can gather and fainter objects can be viewed.

ii. Mirrors: It directs the light rays to the eyepiece

iii. Eyepiece: An eyepiece with a shorter focal length will offer a higher magnification level for the image

iv. Structural support (Tripod): To keep the telescope still enough to prevent disruptions to the visual field

v. Telescope tube: This forms the body of the telescope. It helps in improving the focal length setting by adjusting the knob.

vi. Finderscope: It is a small telescope attached to the main telescopic tube. It is used to find the estimate location of the object that is to be viewed.

1) National Identity

a. Find out the 2 founding fathers who wrote the National Anthem and the Pledge

i. National Anthem (Majulah Singapura) is written by Zubir Said in 1958 and chosen as national anthem when independence is obtained in 1965. He took a year to finish composing the music and lyrics for the song. The song was first performed on 6 September 1958 by the Singapore Chamber Ensemble during the grand finale of a concert staged in the Victoria Theatre to celebrate its official re-opening.

ii. The Pledge is largely drafted by then Minister for Foreign Affairs S. Rajaratnam in February 1966 to promote national loyalty and consciousness among citizens after Singapore’s separation from Malaysia. The first daily recitation of the pledge before the national flag was carried out on 24 August 1966 by students from all government and aided schools.

My Scout Family

1) Find out and write about some of the activities the Scout Section does and about at least 2 proficiency badges

At scouts, the scout section usually will take part in the presentation made by the Akelas like Responsible Gamer presentation, and the Jungle Book presentation. In those sessions, they will get to complete activities and/or learn more about scouts.

During the circuit breaker, we will get to do some activities like creating a group logo.
